Leading the way in Personalized Cancer Medicine

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is setting a new gold standard for Personalized Cancer Medicine for all patients at this cancer centre, across Canada and around the world. Personalized Cancer Medicine includes all of our efforts to detect cancer earlier, diagnose cancer more precisely, target cancer without damaging healthy tissue, and supporting patients and their families throughout the emotional cancer journey.

Dr. Jonathan Irish leads our surgical oncology team and works with technology experts to continually upgrade the tools his surgeons have access to. Advanced imaging technology and robotic surgical technology enable his team to target and remove tumours with smaller incisions (sometimes none at all) while reducing the risk of complications by leaving as much healthy tissue as possible.

“Cancer surgery has always been personalized,” says Dr. Irish, “but today cancer surgeons begin their procedures armed with a clear picture of a patient’s tumour and exactly where it sits in relation to all the surrounding organs and tissue.
